Fish were thought to bring luck, based on the fact that Pisces (the Zodiac sign for fish) usually falls during Adar, the month of Purim when “our joy greatly increases” (Taan 29a). To stress this association, the plates used for sending gifts of food (shalach manot) during this festival often contain fish designs.
