REPRESENTATION IN PERMANENT COLLECTIONS

Public The National Gallery of Australia, Canberra, ACT

The Significance of work having been included in, for example, the National Gallery of Australia (NGA) Collection:
The collection of Australian Art (a category which includes design, decorative art and craft) in the NGA incorporates ‘art’ made in Australia or about Australian subjects since European settlement in 1788, with the greatest emphasis being on the work of the 20th Century. The collection is seen as a contemporary ‘repository’ for significant milestones in the development of Australia’s artistic and cultural heritage. Contemporary curators, the agents who select and propose the purchase of works for National and State collections, tend to be concerned with the scholarly mapping and representation of significant movements and the individuals who contribute to them rather than sampling broadly and trying to collect ‘one of everything’. The National collection is therefore conservative and will try to collect works that track and represent the longer-term trajectory of individuals, the work of whom already has some established national and/or international provenance. Representation in the National collection, with a body of work collected over time, therefore denotes that the individual concerned is considered in the upper ranks of Australian creative practitioners
